The harbour
Klaipėda is Lithuania's only seaport, on the Baltic Sea at the narrow entrance to the Curonian Lagoon. For centuries the town was known as Memel and belonged to Prussia and Germany before becoming part of Lithuania.
The port stays largely ice-free in winter and handles containers, fertilisers, oil products and other bulk cargo, with ferries to Germany and Sweden. A floating terminal for liquefied natural gas has also operated here. Ships enter through a narrow strait with the mainland on one side and the northern tip of the Curonian Spit on the other, a long strip of sand dunes and pine forest.
