The harbour
Riga, Latvia's capital, lies at the mouth of the Daugava River on the Gulf of Riga, an inlet of the Baltic Sea.
Founded in the early thirteenth century, it became an important Hanseatic trading city, and its old town and large collection of Art Nouveau buildings are a World Heritage Site. The port, stretching along the river, handles timber, bulk and general cargo, containers and passenger ferries to Stockholm.
In hard winters the gulf can freeze, and icebreakers help keep the channel open. A sailor coming upriver sees the church spires of the old town rising ahead.
