The harbour

St Petersburg lies at the mouth of the Neva River, at the eastern end of the Gulf of Finland in the Baltic Sea.

Peter the Great founded the city in 1703 as Russia's window on Europe, and it served as the imperial capital for two centuries. The port handles containers, oil products, general cargo and many cruise ships. The naval fortress of Kronstadt stands on Kotlin Island offshore, now crossed by a flood-protection barrier.

In winter the gulf freezes and icebreakers keep ships moving. In summer, a sailor notices the Neva's bridges raised at night to let ships pass.
