The harbour

Helsinki, the capital of Finland, lies on the Gulf of Finland, surrounded by islands and rocky skerries. It is one of the busiest passenger ports in Europe, with frequent ferries to Tallinn and overnight ships to Stockholm.

Cargo has largely moved to the Vuosaari harbour east of the centre. The island fortress of Suomenlinna, built in the eighteenth century while Finland was part of Sweden, guards the main approach and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Sailors notice the icebreakers moored near the centre: in hard winters the sea freezes, and ships depend on them to keep the lanes open.
