The harbour
Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, lies on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland in the Baltic Sea. As the medieval Hanseatic town of Reval, it grew rich on trade, and its walled Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Its passenger harbour is one of the busiest in the Baltic, with frequent ferries across the gulf to Helsinki and services to Stockholm, as well as many cruise ships in summer. Most cargo is handled at Muuga harbour east of the city. Sailors approaching from the sea see the church spires and towers of the Old Town, and in hard winters the gulf can freeze.
