The harbour
Gdańsk lies on the Bay of Gdańsk on Poland's Baltic coast, near the mouth of the Vistula, Poland's longest river.
It grew rich as a Hanseatic trading city exporting grain, and its rebuilt old town still has the medieval wooden harbour crane on the Motława River. The Second World War began with fighting at Westerplatte at the harbour entrance, and the Solidarity movement was born in the city's shipyard in 1980.
The modern port handles containers at a deepwater terminal, as well as oil, coal and bulk cargo. The region is also famous for Baltic amber washed up on its shores.
