The harbour
Le Havre stands on the north bank of the Seine estuary where it opens into the English Channel. Founded in the sixteenth century by King Francis I, it became France's great transatlantic port and today is the country's largest container port, linked by river and rail to Paris.
The city centre was largely destroyed in the Second World War and rebuilt in concrete to the plans of architect Auguste Perret; this post-war centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sailors pick out the tall tower of Saint-Joseph's Church as a landmark from the sea, and upriver the Normandy Bridge spans the estuary.
