The harbour
Brest sits at the western tip of Brittany on the Rade de Brest, a large sheltered roadstead reached through a narrow strait called the Goulet. Its position facing the Atlantic made it France's main Atlantic naval base since the seventeenth century.
The French Navy still bases major forces here, including the ballistic missile submarines at Île Longue. The city was heavily bombed in the Second World War and largely rebuilt. The commercial port handles ship repair, fishing and some cargo, and Brest hosts a well-known maritime festival.
Sailors must watch the strong tidal streams, frequent fog and rocky approaches around the Goulet.
