The harbour
Saint-Nazaire lies at the mouth of the Loire on France's Atlantic coast, west of Nantes. It is best known for its shipyard, Chantiers de l'Atlantique, which built the famous liner Normandie and many of the world's largest cruise ships.
During the Second World War the Germans built a massive submarine base here, and British commandos raided the port's dry dock in 1942. The port handles liquefied natural gas, oil, bulk and general cargo. Sailors entering the estuary pass under the long, high Saint-Nazaire bridge and see giant cruise ships under construction.
