The harbour
Dublin Port lies at the mouth of the River Liffey on Dublin Bay, on Ireland's east coast facing the Irish Sea. The city was founded as a Viking settlement and has been Ireland's main gateway for trade for centuries.
It is the country's busiest port, dominated by ferry and roll-on/roll-off traffic to Holyhead and Liverpool, along with containers, bulk cargo, fuel and cruise ships. Sailors entering the bay pass the long Great South Wall and the Poolbeg lighthouse, and see the two tall red-and-white striped chimneys of the old Poolbeg power station, a familiar Dublin landmark.
