The harbour
Liverpool lies on the east bank of the Mersey estuary, where the river meets the Irish Sea in northwest England. It grew into one of the world's great ports during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, involved in the Atlantic trade and later the departure point for millions of emigrants to the Americas.
Today it handles containers, bulk cargo, ferries to Ireland and the Isle of Man, and cruise ships. Sailors notice the Mersey's strong tides and wide range, the restored Royal Albert Dock and the Royal Liver Building with its two Liver Bird statues watching over the waterfront.
