The harbour
Cork Harbour, on Ireland's south coast, is one of the largest natural harbours in the world. The city of Cork lies at its head on the River Lee, while the town of Cobh, once called Queenstown, sits on Great Island inside the harbour.
Cobh was the departure point for vast numbers of Irish emigrants and was the Titanic's last port of call in 1912. Today the harbour handles containers, bulk cargo, ferries to France and cruise ships, and hosts the Irish naval base at Haulbowline.
Sailors enter past the lighthouse at Roche's Point, with Spike Island's old fort ahead.
