The harbour
Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, sits at the head of Belfast Lough, a sea inlet opening onto the North Channel of the Irish Sea. It was a great shipbuilding centre, and the Harland and Wolff yard built the Titanic and her sister ships here.
Today the port is a busy ferry hub, with frequent sailings to Scotland and England, as well as bulk, container and general cargo traffic and cruise calls. Sailors coming up the lough cannot miss Samson and Goliath, the two huge yellow gantry cranes of the old shipyard that dominate the skyline.
