The harbour
Palma is the capital of Mallorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands, and lies on the broad Bay of Palma in the western Mediterranean. Its harbour is busy with ferries to Barcelona, Valencia and the other islands, and it is one of the Mediterranean's major cruise ports.
The city is also a leading centre for yachting, with large marinas, refit yards and superyachts filling its waterfront. Palma has been a trading port since Roman and Moorish times. Sailors entering the bay are struck by the great Gothic cathedral, La Seu, standing above the old sea wall, and by the round Bellver Castle on a wooded hill.
