The harbour
Marseille is France's largest port and second city, on the Gulf of Lion on the Mediterranean coast.
Greek settlers from Phocaea founded it as Massalia around 600 BC, making it one of the oldest cities in France. The old harbour, the Vieux-Port, is now used by yachts and fishing boats, while modern terminals handle ferries to Corsica, Sardinia and North Africa, cruise ships and containers, with oil and bulk traffic at Fos to the west.
A sailor sees the basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde on its hilltop, and must be ready for the mistral, the cold northwest wind.
