The harbour

Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, sits on the island's south coast facing the Gulf of Cagliari, also called the Golfo degli Angeli. Founded by the Phoenicians and later held by Carthage and Rome, it keeps a walled medieval quarter, the Castello, on a hill above the harbour.

The port has a container transhipment terminal, cruise berths and regular ferries to mainland Italy and Sicily. Large lagoons and salt pans lie on either side of the city, and one thing sailors often notice is the flocks of pink flamingos that feed in the shallow wetlands of Molentargius, just a short distance from the busy quays.
