The harbour
Annaba is a port city in northeastern Algeria, near the Tunisian border, on a broad gulf of the Mediterranean at the mouth of the Seybouse River. In antiquity it was Hippo Regius, where Saint Augustine served as bishop, and the ruins of the Roman town still stand on the outskirts.
The port is closely tied to heavy industry, shipping iron ore, steel products and phosphates from the nearby El Hadjar steelworks and inland mines, alongside general cargo and ferries. Approaching from the sea, sailors see the wooded Edough mountains rising steeply behind the city.
