The harbour
Palermo, the capital of Sicily, lies on a bay on the island's north coast, facing the Tyrrhenian Sea, sheltered to the north by the headland of Monte Pellegrino.
Founded by the Phoenicians, it was later ruled by Arabs and Normans, and its Arab-Norman churches and palaces are a World Heritage Site. The port is a major ferry hub with routes to Naples, Genoa, Sardinia and Tunis, and it receives many cruise ships.
A sailor entering the bay sees Monte Pellegrino rising steeply on one side and the city's domes spread out across the plain known as the Conca d'Oro.
