The harbour
Valletta, the capital of Malta, stands on a peninsula between two deep natural harbours, the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour, in the central Mediterranean. The city was built by the Knights of St John after the Great Siege of 1565, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Grand Harbour has a long naval history, especially as a British base during the Second World War. Today it is an important cruise port and serves ferries, yachts and ship repair. Sailors entering the harbour pass towering stone fortifications, and the Saluting Battery fires a ceremonial cannon over the water each day.
