The harbour
Tripoli, the capital of Libya, lies on the Mediterranean coast of North Africa. It was founded by the Phoenicians as Oea and later became one of the three cities of Roman Tripolitania.
From the sixteenth to the early nineteenth century it was a base for Barbary corsairs, which led to conflict with the United States in the First Barbary War. The port today handles containers, general cargo, fuel and fishing.
Sailors entering the harbour see the Red Castle, the old fortress of Assaraya al-Hamra, rising above the waterfront at the edge of the old city.
