The harbour
Benghazi is Libya's second city and the main port of the eastern region of Cyrenaica, on the Mediterranean at the eastern edge of the Gulf of Sidra. The site was settled by Greek colonists in ancient times, when it was known as Euesperides and later Berenice.
The harbour, sheltered by breakwaters, handles general cargo, containers and fuel imports for eastern Libya, while much of the country's oil is exported through other terminals along the gulf. Years of conflict have affected the city and its port. The coastline around it is low and flat, so sailors rely on the breakwaters and harbour lights rather than high landmarks to find the entrance.
