The harbour
Piraeus is the port of Athens, on the Saronic Gulf a few kilometres southwest of the city centre. It has served Athens since the fifth century BC, when the Long Walls linked the city to its harbours and fleet.
Today it is the largest port in Greece and one of the busiest passenger ports in Europe, sending ferries and fast boats to the Aegean islands and Crete. It also has a major container terminal, operated by the Chinese company COSCO, and handles cruise ships and general cargo. Sailors notice the constant arrivals and departures of ferries and the crowded traffic at the harbour entrance.
