The harbour
Thessaloniki, Greece's second-largest city, lies at the head of the Thermaic Gulf in the northern Aegean. Founded in the fourth century BC by the Macedonian king Cassander, it has been a major trading city ever since, and its Roman and Byzantine monuments are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The port is a gateway for the Balkans, handling containers, bulk cargo and general cargo for northern Greece and inland neighbours, as well as cruise ships. Sailors notice the White Tower on the waterfront and, on a clear day, the summit of Mount Olympus visible across the gulf.
