The harbour
Bar is Montenegro's main seaport, on the southern Adriatic coast where steep limestone mountains drop almost straight to the sea.
The port handles general and bulk cargo and is the terminus of the Belgrade–Bar railway, which links it to Serbia. Regular car ferries cross the Adriatic to Bari in Italy. The modern town grew up around the harbour after the Second World War, while the ruined walled settlement of Old Bar sits on a hill a few kilometres inland.
Approaching from the sea, a sailor sees the bulk of Mount Rumija rising behind the town.
