The harbour
Split is the largest city in Dalmatia, on Croatia's Adriatic coast. Its old town grew inside the vast palace built by the Roman emperor Diocletian around AD 300, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and still houses shops, homes and restaurants.
The port is Croatia's busiest passenger harbour, with frequent ferries and catamarans to the islands of Brač, Hvar, Vis and others, and services to Italy, as well as cruise ships and cargo. Sailors notice the palm-lined Riva promenade and the strong bora wind that can blow down from the mountains, especially in winter.
