The harbour
Algiers, the capital of Algeria, faces north across the Bay of Algiers on the Mediterranean. Its white buildings climb steep hills above the harbour, earning it the name Alger la Blanche, and its old Casbah is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Under Ottoman rule the city was a powerful base for corsairs who raided Mediterranean shipping. Today the port is the country's main gateway for imported goods and containers, and passenger ferries link it with Marseille and ports in Spain. From the sea, the tiers of white façades rising behind the breakwaters make the city easy to pick out from a long way off.
