The harbour
Varna is Bulgaria's largest port and third-largest city, on the Black Sea coast. Founded as the Greek colony of Odessos, it is also known for the Varna Necropolis, where some of the oldest worked gold objects in the world were found.
A canal connects the harbour to Lake Varna and the industrial port beyond, which handles grain, bulk cargo and containers. The city is a base of the Bulgarian Navy and a popular summer resort.
Sailors approaching see long beaches north and south of the city and the high Asparuhov Bridge spanning the canal entrance.
