The harbour
Novorossiysk lies on Tsemes Bay on Russia's Black Sea coast. It is one of the country's largest ports and a major outlet for crude oil, oil products and grain, and a terminal nearby receives oil by pipeline from Kazakhstan.
The town was heavily fought over in the Second World War, and today it is also a base for the Russian Black Sea Fleet.
Sailors know Novorossiysk for the bora, a fierce, cold wind that rushes down from the mountains behind the bay in winter. It can reach hurricane strength, raising dangerous seas and coating ships and quays with ice.
