The harbour
Samsun is the largest city on Turkey's Black Sea coast, set between the deltas of the Kızılırmak and Yeşilırmak rivers. It was an ancient Greek colony known as Amisos.
On 19 May 1919 Mustafa Kemal (Atatürk) landed here, an event marked as the start of the Turkish War of Independence. The region was long known for its tobacco. Today the port handles general cargo, grain, steel and ro-ro traffic across the Black Sea.
Sailors approaching see low, fertile delta plains on both sides of the city, with green hills of the Pontic Mountains behind.
