The harbour
Abidjan sits on the Ébrié Lagoon on the Gulf of Guinea, and ships reach its port through the Vridi Canal, a channel cut through the coastal sandbar. It is the economic capital of Côte d'Ivoire and one of the main gateways of West Africa.
The port ships large quantities of cocoa and coffee, handles containers and transit cargo for landlocked neighbours such as Burkina Faso and Mali, and is a major landing point for tuna caught in the Atlantic.
Sailors notice the sudden change from open surf to calm lagoon water once through the canal, with the towers of the Plateau district ahead.
