The harbour
Lomé, the capital of Togo, sits on the Bight of Benin in the Gulf of Guinea, right on the border with Ghana.
Its deepwater port is one of the main container transshipment hubs on the West African coast and also serves as a transit route for goods bound for landlocked Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali. The city is known for its busy markets.
The coast is low and straight, lined with palm-fringed beaches and open to the Atlantic swell. A sailor notices the strong surf and the long breakwaters that create the only real shelter along this stretch.
