The harbour
Lagos is Nigeria's largest city and busiest port, on the Bight of Benin. Ships enter the Lagos Lagoon through the Commodore Channel between long breakwaters, then berth at the Apapa and Tin Can Island terminals. A newer deep-water port has been built at Lekki to the east.
The port handles most of Nigeria's imported goods, including containers, vehicles, fuel and food, serving a huge and growing population.
Sailors often find many ships waiting at anchor offshore, and the lagoon is crowded with small craft, ferries and barges moving between the islands and the mainland.
