The harbour
Libreville, the capital of Gabon, lies on the estuary of the Komo River, known as the Gabon Estuary, which opens into the Gulf of Guinea just north of the equator. The city was founded in the mid-nineteenth century as a settlement for freed slaves, which gave it its name, meaning free town.
Most commercial traffic uses the port of Owendo, south of the city centre, which handles timber, manganese and other exports along with imported goods and fuel. Sailors notice the hot, humid equatorial climate, the heavy rains of the wet seasons and the dense green forest lining the estuary shores.
