The harbour
Pointe-Noire is the main seaport and economic capital of the Republic of the Congo, on the Atlantic coast of Central Africa.
It is the centre of the country's oil industry, with offshore fields nearby, and its deepwater port handles crude oil, timber, containers and transshipment cargo. The Congo–Ocean Railway links it to Brazzaville on the Congo River; it was built in the colonial era at a heavy cost in workers' lives.
The name comes from a dark rocky point noted by Portuguese navigators. Offshore, a sailor sees oil platforms and support vessels working along the coast.
