The harbour

Cotonou is Benin's largest city and economic capital, built on a narrow strip of land between Lake Nokoué and the Bight of Benin in the Gulf of Guinea.

Its breakwater-protected port is the country's main gateway and serves as a transit route for landlocked Niger and Burkina Faso. It is also known for its large trade in imported used vehicles and goods, many of which continue overland to Nigeria.

The coast here is straight, low and sandy, with no natural shelter. A sailor notices the heavy Atlantic surf breaking along the beaches on either side of the harbour.
