The harbour
Tema lies on the coast of Ghana, just east of Accra on the Gulf of Guinea. Its harbour was built in the years around independence, under Kwame Nkrumah, and the town grew up around it as a planned industrial city.
It is Ghana's busiest port, handling containers, cocoa, fuel and imports, and it also serves landlocked Burkina Faso. A large fishing harbour sits beside the commercial port.
The Greenwich Meridian passes almost exactly through Tema. Sailors also notice the many brightly painted wooden fishing canoes working off the beaches.
