The harbour
Douala is Cameroon's largest city and main port, built on the estuary of the Wouri River near the Bight of Biafra. It also serves as a gateway for landlocked Chad and the Central African Republic.
The port exports timber, cocoa, coffee and bananas, and handles containers, fuel and imported goods. It was the main centre of the German colony of Kamerun before the First World War.
Ships reach the port along a long dredged channel through the estuary, which constantly silts up. In clear weather sailors can see Mount Cameroon, West Africa's highest mountain, rising to the west.
