The harbour
Luanda, the capital of Angola, lies on a bay of the Atlantic sheltered by the Ilha de Luanda, a long, narrow sand spit. It was founded by the Portuguese in 1576 and for centuries was a centre of the Atlantic slave trade.
Today the port is Angola's main gateway for imports of food, building materials and manufactured goods, and it supports the country's large offshore oil industry. The Fortress of São Miguel still overlooks the bay.
Sailors entering the bay pass the end of the Ilha, lined with beaches and restaurants, with the city's towers rising on the mainland shore.
