Walvis Bay
Namibia · Cape of Good Hope
The harbour
Walvis Bay lies on the Atlantic coast of Namibia, where the dunes of the Namib Desert run almost to the sea.
The bay is sheltered by the long sandspit of Pelican Point and is Namibia's main deepwater port, handling containers, fish, salt and transit cargo for Botswana, Zambia and other inland countries. It remained a South African enclave until 1994. The cold Benguela Current makes the waters rich in fish, and the lagoon is famous for its flamingos.
A sailor often meets thick coastal fog and may be joined by seals and dolphins near the harbour entrance.
