Cape Town
South Africa · Cape of Good Hope
The harbour
Cape Town lies on Table Bay on the Atlantic coast of South Africa, under the flat-topped wall of Table Mountain, not far north of the Cape of Good Hope.
The Dutch East India Company founded it in 1652 as a supply station for ships sailing between Europe and Asia. The port today handles containers, deciduous fruit and other exports, fishing fleets and ship repair, while the old docks have become the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront.
Robben Island lies out in the bay. Sailors know the strong southeaster, the 'Cape Doctor', which can roar down off the mountain in summer.
