Beira
Mozambique · Indian Ocean
The harbour
Beira lies at the mouth of the Pungwe River on the Mozambique Channel, in the centre of Mozambique's long Indian Ocean coast.
Its importance comes from the Beira Corridor, the rail, road and pipeline route that connects the port to landlocked Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia. Fuel, fertiliser, grain and general cargo come in; minerals, tobacco and other produce go out.
The city is low-lying and was badly damaged by Cyclone Idai in 2019. Sailors notice the large tidal range and the muddy, silt-laden approach channel, which needs constant dredging to stay open.
