The harbour
Dar es Salaam lies on a natural harbour on the Indian Ocean coast of Tanzania. Its name comes from the Arabic for "haven of peace", and the town was developed by the Sultan of Zanzibar in the nineteenth century before becoming a German and then British colonial capital.
It is Tanzania's main port and a vital gateway for landlocked neighbours such as Zambia, Malawi, Rwanda, Burundi and the eastern Congo, handling containers, fuel and bulk goods. Fast ferries run from here to Zanzibar. Ships enter through a narrow channel into the inner harbour, and traditional wooden dhows still work alongside modern cargo ships.
