The harbour

Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, lies on the Indian Ocean coast of the Horn of Africa. It has been a trading port for many centuries; the traveller Ibn Battuta described it as a wealthy city in the fourteenth century.

Dhows and merchant ships traded here with Arabia, Persia and India. Today the port, protected by a breakwater, is the country's main entry point for food, fuel and other imports, and it has been rebuilt after years of conflict.

The coast is open to the ocean, so sailors face heavy swell when the monsoon winds blow, and reefs lie close along the shore.
