The harbour
Aden lies on the Gulf of Aden near the southern entrance to the Red Sea at Bab-el-Mandeb. Its harbour sits beside the crater of an extinct volcano, giving one of the best natural anchorages on the Arabian coast.
Under British rule from 1839 to 1967 it became a coaling and bunkering station on the route through Suez, and a refinery was built at Little Aden. Today it handles containers, fuel and general cargo, though conflict has disrupted trade.
Arriving ships see the bare, jagged volcanic peaks of the Shamsan range rising straight behind the old town of Crater.
