Bandar Abbas
Iran · Persian Gulf
The harbour
Bandar Abbas stands on the northern shore of the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow passage linking the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman. Once known as Gombroon, it was renamed after Shah Abbas I, who drove the Portuguese from nearby Hormuz island in the early seventeenth century.
It is Iran's busiest port, with the Shahid Rajaee terminal handling most of the country's container traffic, along with general cargo and ferries to the islands of Qeshm and Hormuz. Sailors notice intense heat and humidity in summer and some of the world's heaviest tanker traffic passing offshore.
