The harbour
Manama is the capital of Bahrain, an island kingdom in the Persian Gulf off the coast of Saudi Arabia. Its main commercial cargo port is now Khalifa bin Salman Port at Hidd, which took over from the older Mina Salman.
Bahrain was a trading centre in ancient times and was long famous for its pearl diving. It is now headquarters of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet, and the King Fahd Causeway links it to Saudi Arabia.
Sailors must navigate shallow water, sandbanks and coral reefs around the islands, in some of the hottest and most humid sea conditions anywhere.
