Jebel Ali
United Arab Emirates · Persian Gulf
The harbour
Jebel Ali lies on the Persian Gulf coast of Dubai, southwest of the city centre. It is a man-made harbour dredged out of the desert shoreline and opened at the end of the 1970s; it has since grown into the largest port in the Middle East.
It is a major container hub where cargo is transferred to ships serving the Gulf, East Africa and the Indian subcontinent, and it sits beside the Jebel Ali Free Zone, home to thousands of companies.
Sailors arrive along a flat, sandy coast in intense heat and humidity, among the artificial islands built off Dubai's shore.
