The harbour
Shuwaikh Port is Kuwait's main commercial port, on the southern shore of Kuwait Bay at the head of the Persian Gulf, just west of central Kuwait City.
It handles containers, general cargo and food imports for the country. Before oil, Kuwait was known for its seafaring, pearl diving and dhow trade with India and East Africa, and traditional wooden dhows can still be seen in the city's harbours.
The bay is shallow, and summer heat is extreme. From the water, a sailor looks east along the coast to the distinctive Kuwait Towers standing on their point.
