The harbour

Doha, the capital of Qatar, lies on a shallow bay on the east coast of the Qatar peninsula in the Persian Gulf. It grew from a small pearling and fishing settlement into a modern city after the discovery of oil and gas.

Most commercial cargo now uses Hamad Port, a large deep-water port built south of the city, while the old Doha port has been turned into a cruise terminal and waterfront district. The country's liquefied natural gas is shipped from Ras Laffan further north. Sailors approaching the old harbour see traditional wooden dhows moored along the curving Corniche, set against the towers of West Bay.
