The harbour
Karachi lies on the Arabian Sea just west of the Indus delta and is Pakistan's largest city and main port. The harbour is sheltered by Manora Island and the Kiamari area, with a second large port, Port Qasim, to the east.
It handles most of Pakistan's container trade along with oil, grain and other bulk cargo, and also serves landlocked Afghanistan. The Pakistan Navy has its main base here.
Sailors approach past the Manora lighthouse at the harbour mouth. During the southwest monsoon the sea outside can be rough, with heavy swell rolling onto the coast.
